CULTIVATING EXCELLENCE: CEO TEAM VISITS KANKAKEE NURSERY

What a beautiful October morning to visit Kankakee Nursery! Kankakee County CEO students had the pleasure of touring Kankakee Nursery this morning, located in rural St. Anne. Established in 1925, Kankakee Nursery spans 2,500 acres and is one of the largest of its kind in the U.S. They specialize in both balled-and-burlapped and container-grown plants, with a focus on native species. The nursery serves a wide range of clients across the U.S. and Canada, including landscape supply centers, contractors, municipalities, and garden centers.

Third-generation owners Pete and John Worth led the tour, providing valuable insights into the family-owned business that has been in operation for 99 years. They shared the nursery’s history, tracing its roots back nearly a century, and discussed their responsibilities in carrying on the legacy started by previous generations.

Throughout the tour, students were taken through the various stages of the nursery’s operations. They observed the propagation process, explored the expansive fields where trees are carefully cultivated, witnessed trees being dug in the field, and learned about the shipping process. The Worth brothers also emphasized the differences between wholesale and retail business models, discussed how they attract and retain clients, and addressed the need for adaptability in a changing environment.

One of the key takeaways from the visit was the importance of building and maintaining a caring culture for employees and customers, something they learned from their grandfather, father, and uncle. Their strong company culture is evident through the number of employees who have worked for Kankakee Nursery for over 20, 30, and 40 years.

The experience offered Kankakee County CEO students a unique perspective on the horticulture industry, while also highlighting the importance of hard work, adaptability, and customer-centric values. The tour provided a deeper appreciation for the family-run nursery and the expertise required to maintain its success.

Thank you to Pete, John, and the entire Kankakee Nursery team for their time and for sharing their wealth of knowledge.
